Hellberg Captures Flight Championship at Furman Duals

Greenville, S.C. – USC Upstate sophomore Elin Hellberg won the Flight 5 championship this past weekend as the USC Upstate women's tennis team wrapped up fall competition at the Furman Duals hosted by Furman at the Mickel Tennis Center.

USC Upstate had seven players competing in the tournament in Hellberg, Noelia Acuna, Ana Boza, Gabriela Cevallos, Maria Jardim, Victoria Saldh and Vale Zarama.

Hellberg won two matches in Flight 5 for the Spartans against Nasha Ghajar from Liberty and Grace Waldron of Charleston Southern to win the flight championship.

In doubles play, the combinations consisted of Acuna/Boza, Saldh/Zarama and Hellberg/Jardim. Acuna/Boza faced Charleston Southern and Liberty in their two matches in Flight 1 while Saldh/Zarama went up against Furman and Charleston Southern.

Hellberg/Jardim won two matches against Columbus State and Furman in the Flight 2 doubles bracket and reached the third round.

In singles play, Saldh won her consolation match against Jessica Leeman from Presbyterian College in the Flight 2 bracket. Zarama, also playing in Flight 2, picked up a win against Elizabeth Williams from Charleston Southern.

Jardim won her match versus Beth Lacey of Presbyterian College in Flight 3. Boza also competed in Flight 5 and recorded one win versus Elle Baker of Kennesaw State.

USC Upstate opens its spring season on Jan. 18, 2019 at home against College of Charleston.
