Boza, Hellberg Lead USC Upstate at Mercer Gridiron Classic

Macon, Ga. – Ana Boza and Elin Hellberg combined to advance to the championship match in doubles play as the USC Upstate women's tennis team competed at the Mercer Gridiron Classic this past weekend in Macon, Ga.

Boza and Hellberg teamed up to appear in the championship match of the Flight B Doubles Consolation bracket. After falling in their first match of the Flight B Doubles bracket, the duo came back to win in the quarterfinals of consolation play by default over Andjela Rajovic and Laura Cocoma of Georgia State. The combination then advanced to the championship match with a 6-2 victory against Paola Beneyto Moller and Daniela Campo of Middle Georgia State.

Boza also picked up a win in singles play competing in the Flight C bracket. After receiving a first round bye, Boza defeated Ellie Baker of Kennesaw State 4-6, 5-3, ret. (inj.).

Victoria Saldh and Maria Jardim both collected one win in the Flight A Singles Consolation bracket. Saldh earned a 6-1, 2-6, 1-0(2) victory over Georgia Southern's Elizabeth Goines while Jardim topped Elena Tendero of Jacksonville 1-6, 6-4, 1-0(8) to advance to the semifinals.

The Spartans return to the court Oct. 18-22 at the ITA Regionals in Chapel Hill, N.C.
