Saldh Finishes Third at USCU Spartan Women’s Challenge

Spartanburg, S.C. – Victoria Saldh's third place performance in the Green Singles bracket highlighted the weekend for the USC Upstate women's tennis team as the Spartans opened their fall season hosting the USCU Spartan Women's Challenge at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.

Saldh was one of three players for USC Upstate competing in the Green Singles bracket and opened play with back-to-back wins over Milica Panic of Gardner-Webb and Camille Haus of Limestone in straight sets. She defeated Panic 6-0, 6-0 and Haus 6-2, 6-2. In the third place match, Saldh topped Georgia Southern's Lindsay Truscott in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.

Vale Zarama and Elin Hellberg also participated in the Green Singles bracket. Zarama was victorious in her opening match defeating Paige Christian of Georgia Southern in three sets 6-2, 2-6, 10-6.

Noelia Acuna, Gabriela Cevallos and Maria Jardim all competed in the Black Singles bracket. Jardim recorded two victories while Cevallos advanced to the consolation final. Jardim defeated Madeline Finley of UNC Asheville in her first match 6-3, 6-1 and later topped Christin Louw of UNC Asheville 6-2, 6-3. After dropping her first match of the tournament, Cevallos would defeat Laura Aholu of Limestone 6-4, 6-1 to move into the consolation final.

The combination of Saldh and Zarama led the Spartans in doubles competition as they advanced to the championship match. The duo started off with a 6-2 triumph over Alexandra Dolfi and Alison Walsh of Limestone and followed with a 6-4 victory against Valentine Limauge and Adrienne Vesely of Gardner-Webb. They advanced to the championship match with a 6-2 win versus Emi Bujan and Charlotte van Diemen of Georgia Southern.

Acuna/Jardim and Cevallos/Hellberg both collected opening match victories. Acuna and Jardim won 7-5 over Truscott and Christian while Cevallos and Hellberg defeated Panic and Daniela Naupari 6-2. Acuna and Jardim later topped Finley and Anastasia Horvat 6-1.

USC Upstate is back in action Oct. 5-7 at the Mercer Gridiron Classic in Macon, Ga.
