Spartanburg, S.C. – Liza Klyachkin broke a 3-3 tie and won the deciding singles match to lead Mercer to a 4-3 victory over USC Upstate Friday morning at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
Danielle Jones and Lucie Payrat gave Mercer an early advantage when they defeated Isabel von Stryk and Anna Zoske 8-6 from the No. 1 double position. Spartan seniors Taylor Cohen and Talia Rojas took the second match following an 8-6 victory over Roxy Bartz and Klyachkin at No. 2. Natalie Franklin and Haley Powell won the third match and clinched the point for Mercer with an 8-7 win over Lindsey Buenger and Sarah Vande Berg at No. 3.
Franklin put Mercer ahead 2-0 when she turned in a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Rojas from the No. 4 singles position. Von Stryk put Upstate on the board and cut the deficit in half following her 6-2, 6-1win over Jones at No. 1.
Zoske pulled Upstate even and tied the score 2-2 after she bested Lucie Payrat 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2, but Powell regained the lead for Mercer with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Buenger at No. 5. Cohen kept Upstate alive and knotted the match 3-3 with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Bartz at No. 3. In the final match, Klyachkin posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over Vande Berge to seal the win for the Bears.
Upstate closes the regular season Saturday at 10 a.m. when the Spartans host Kennesaw State on Senior Day.
