Softball Preview:  at Jacksonville

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate softball team closes out a six-game road trip on Wednesday evening traveling to Jacksonville, Fla. to face the Jacksonville Dolphins in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. from the Debbie & Fred Pruitt Softball Complex.

USC Upstate (17-5) played in its final tournament of the season last weekend and posted a 2-2 record with wins over Eastern Illinois and Colgate at The USF-Clearwater Parks and Recreation Showcase Tournament. The Spartans defeated Eastern Illinois 8-0 in five innings and Colgate 3-2. Makenna Helton and Sarah Price led USC Upstate offensively with a .500 average while Elisa Cecchetti had two home runs and four RBI. Kristen Wright also recorded four RBI. In the circle, Christina Biggerstaff and Erin Hill both had one win while Biggerstaff posted a 2.33 ERA.

Biggerstaff and Price were both recognized by the Big South Conference on Monday as Biggerstaff was named the Pitcher of the Week and Price the Freshman of the Week.

Helton leads the Spartans this season with a .396 average while Alyssa Oakes has a team-leading seven home runs and 20 RBI. Biggerstaff is 10-1 in the circle with a 0.80 ERA.

Jacksonville (11-12) is coming off the JU/UNF Spring Break Challenge last weekend going 4-1 with wins over Georgetown, Presbyterian, UNC Wilmington and Charleston Southern. Kassidy Cross leads the Dolphins with a .356 average while Hannah Roberts has five home runs and Abby Genest 18 RBI. Alyssa Bilodeau is 5-5 in the circle with a 1.85 ERA. JU is under the direction of second-year head coach Erica Ayers.

The Spartans host Presbyterian this weekend, March 16-17, at Cyrill Stadium in their first-ever Big South Conference series.
