USC Upstate Softball Announces 54-Game Schedule for 2019 Season

Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate head softball coach Chris Hawkins announced today that the Spartans will play a total of 54 games for the upcoming 2019 season including 24 in their first season in the Big South Conference.

USC Upstate's 2019 schedule will feature two teams that appeared in the NCAA Super Regionals last season in LSU and South Carolina, and also includes six games against Power 5 programs in LSU, South Carolina, Indiana, Duke and Virginia Tech. The Spartans host Virginia Tech and Duke at Cyrill Stadium.

"We are looking forward to a challenging schedule both on the road and at Cyrill Stadium," said Hawkins. "Going into the Big South Conference for the first time, I look forward to the new competition it will bring and the excitement of developing new rivalries."

USC Upstate is scheduled to compete in five tournaments this season and will host three in the Spartan Classic (Feb. 9-10), Upstate Classic (Feb. 15-16) and Wings Etc. Classic (Feb. 23-24). The Spartans then travel to the Purple & Gold Challenge (Mar. 1-2) in Baton Rouge, La. and Clearwater, Fla. for a tournament hosted by South Florida (Mar. 9-10).

"Participating in LSU's Tournament will be a highlight for us," Hawkins added. "Our team this year has very good chemistry and they play real well together as a team."

USC Upstate opens the 2019 season with 13 straight home games ranging from Feb. 9-27. The Spartans begin the year hosting Youngstown State, Towson, Miami (OH) and East Carolina in the Spartan Classic. USC Upstate then entertains Bowling Green, Boston, Connecticut and Virginia Tech in the Upstate Classic. The Spartans host their final tournament in the Wings Etc. Classic against N.C. Central and Robert Morris. USC Upstate wraps up its season-opening homestand on Feb. 27 against Duke.

The Spartans start the month of March playing 10 of their first 12 games on the road including the Purple & Gold Challenge and USF Tournament. USC Upstate faces Illinois State, LSU, Stephen F. Austin and Indiana at the Purple & Gold Challenge, and Indiana, St. John's, Eastern Illinois and Colgate during the USF Tournament. The Spartans host East Tennessee State in a doubleheader on Mar. 6 before traveling to Jacksonville on Mar. 13 for a doubleheader.

The inaugural season in the Big South begins Mar. 16-17 for USC Upstate when it hosts Presbyterian College in a three-game series at Cyrill Stadium. The Spartans also have conference home series with Hampton (Mar. 30-31), Gardner-Webb (Apr. 10-11) and Radford (Apr. 13-14). USC Upstate travels to Charleston Southern (Mar. 19-20), Longwood (Mar. 23-24), Campbell (Apr. 6-7) and Winthrop (Apr. 19-20) in conference play.

The Spartans play five midweek games during the month of April versus Western Carolina (Apr. 3), at South Carolina (Apr. 17) and at Furman (Apr. 24) to close out the season.
