USC Upstate Falls to No. 2 Florida Gulf Coast at ASUN Softball Championship

DeLand, Fla. – Kristen Wright had one hit and one run scored as the third-seed USC Upstate softball team fell to the second-seeded Florida Gulf Coast Eagles on Thursday morning in game three of the ASUN Softball Championship from Patricia Wilson Field.

USC Upstate falls to 32-18 on the season while Florida Gulf Coast improves to 39-15 overall.

Scoring Breakdown

  • Bottom 2nd – The Eagles struck first for two runs to take a 2-0 lead over the Spartans. Brittany McGuire put FGCU on the board first with her solo home run to center field and Haley Morrell followed with an RBI double to right center field that scored Ashley Swiderski.
  • Bottom 4th – Florida Gulf Coast added to its lead at 5-0 after scoring three times on a home run to left field by Bri Innamorato.
  • Top 6th – USC Upstate cut its deficit down to 5-1 after Wright stole home. Wright reached base on a one-out single down the left field line, and advanced to third on an error and fielder's choice.
  • Bottom 6th – The Eagles answered with a single run in the sixth to go back ahead 6-1 on a solo home run to left field by Brooke Clemens to lead off the inning.


  • Riley Randolph (18-6) picked up the win tossing a complete game and allowed one run (none earned) on three hits, two walks and six strikeouts.
  • Christina Biggerstaff (16-10) took the loss giving up five runs (four earned) on four hits, two walks and three strikeouts.
  • Wright, Hannah Davis and Kayla Hussey each had one hit for the Spartans.
  • Wright scored once and registered two stolen bases in the contest.
  • Ansley Gilstrap added one stolen base to give her 41 this season, three away from tying Shay Slater for the all-time single-season record set in 2006.
  • McGuire led FGCU offensively with two hits while Innamorato drove in a game-high three RBI.


  • The Spartans will play the loser of No. 1 Kennesaw State-No. 5 Jacksonville tonight at 5:30 p.m.
