USC Upstate Closes out Regular Season with South Carolina, East Tennessee State

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate softball team finishes its regular season this week with three non-conference games, one home and two away, against the No. 13/14 South Carolina Gamecocks and East Tennessee State Buccaneers.

USC Upstate begins its week on Wednesday evening hosting South Carolina at 6 p.m. from Cyrill Stadium before traveling to Johnson City, Tenn. on Thursday for a doubleheader against East Tennessee State beginning at 4 p.m.

The Spartans are coming off a two-game series sweep on the road of Stetson last weekend defeating the Hatters by scores of 10-4 and 6-5. Kristen Wright led USC Upstate offensively with four hits while Brittany Case added a .600 average at the plate. Logan Morris recorded a team-leading five RBI and homered once along with Karla Beasley. Erin Hill and Christina Biggerstaff both picked up a win in the circle.

Biggerstaff was named the ASUN Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season on Monday after helping the Spartans to a series win at Stetson, striking out 12 in the opener. It was her seventh double-digit strikeout performance this season and third with 12.

Beasley leads the USC Upstate offense this season with a .391 average and 14 home runs while Morris has a team-high 39 RBI. In the circle, Biggerstaff is 15-8 with a 1.78 ERA and 207 strikeouts.

South Carolina enters the midweek contest ranked 13th in this week's Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll and 14th in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll with a 37-11 overall record following a three-game sweep of Missouri. The Gamecocks are led offensively by Kenzi Maguire with a .338 average while Alyssa VanDerveer has hit nine home runs and Mackenzie Boesel contributes 34 RBI. In the circle, Cayla Drotar has a 15-4 record and Kelsey Oh a 1.59 ERA. South Carolina is under the direction of eighth-year head coach Beverly Smith.

East Tennessee State currently sits at 13-23 on the season after falling at seventh-ranked Tennessee 11-3 on April 17. Lauren Lee leads the Buccaneers on offense with a .316 average while Tiffany Laughren has six home runs and 18 RBI. In the circle, Madison Ogle is 9-12 with a 2.73 ERA. ETSU is led by eighth-year head coach Brad Irwin.

The Spartans trail the Gamecocks in the all-time series 5-3 but lead the Buccaneers 17-4.
