SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate head women's soccer coach Tyson John announced the 17 game regular season schedule and a pair of preseason exhibition matches in August earlier today.
The USC Upstate women's soccer team is coming off an historic season winning the most games in the Division I era and advancing to the semifinals round of the Big South Tournament. This season the Spartans will look to build on their success. Including exhibition games fans will have 11 opportunities to see the Spartans in action at County University Soccer Stadium.
On Monday, August 12 the Spartans will play their first exhibition match of the season against Davidson University at 4 p.m. Last season USC Upstate scored a pair of second half goals against the Wildcats to force overtime but Davidson came away with the victory after a 95th minute goal. The second preseason game of the year will be against Furman on Saturday, August 17 at 6 p.m. The two squads have not played against one another since the 2017 season, when the Paladins defeated the Spartans 6-1.
USC Upstate will open up the regular season at home against American University at 1 p.m., on Sunday, August 25. The Spartans will then hit the road with a pair of night matches at East Tennessee State on August 28 and South Carolina State on September 1. Last season USC Upstate went 1-1 against ETSU and S.C. State.
The Spartans return home to face Mars Hill on Thursday, September 5 at 7 p.m. USC Upstate is 5-0 all-time against the Mountain Lions and the two squads last met in the 2005 season. USC Upstate will have a few days off before heading down to the coast of South Carolina to take on The Citadel at 4 p.m. on Tuesday September 10.
USC Upstate will have trio of home matches beginning on Friday, September 13 against inter-city rival Wofford at 7 p.m. In last season's contest Abbie Ellis scored a goal in the opening moments of the game to give the Spartans an early lead. Wofford tied the game in the 20th minute and then took the lead on a goal in the 80th minute of the contest. On Sunday, September 15, USC Upstate will face Florida International and on Saturday, September 21 the Spartans will open up Big South play against Hampton University at 7 p.m.
A midweek game at UNC Asheville is up next for the Spartans on Wednesday, September 25. A penalty kick by Ellis in the 52nd minute of the game gave USC Upstate the victory over the Bulldogs last season. The Spartans close out the month of September with a Big South match against High Point at 5 p.m., on Saturday, September 28.
October kicksoff with a short trip to Presbyterian College on Wednesday, October 2. The Spartans defeated the Blue Hose 2-0 a year ago at County University Soccer Stadium. Three days later USC Upstate will play Campbell at 7 p.m., on Saturday, October 5 and they will wrap up their home stand against Radford on Wednesday, October 9 at 7 p.m.
Longwood will await the Spartans on Saturday, October 12 at 2 p.m. USC Upstate defeated Longwood 1-0 in the Quarterfinals round of the Big South Tournament. The Spartans will head back down to the coast to play Charleston Southern on Wednesday, October 16 at 3 p.m.
Senior Night for USC Upstate will be on Saturday, October 19 against Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m. USC Upstate went 0-2 against the Runnin' Bulldogs last season and they were eliminated by Gardner-Webb in the Big South Tournament semifinals. USC Upstate ends the regular season on the road at Winthrop on Saturday, October 26 at 7 p.m.
