Spartan Women’s Soccer Picked Eighth in Big South Preseason Poll

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's soccer team has been projected to finish in eighth place according to the league's head coaches as the Big South announced its annual Preseason Women's Soccer Poll this afternoon.

USC Upstate garnered a total of 48 points in the preseason poll for the eighth place projection. The Spartans return 16 letterwinners, including six starters, from last year's team that set a new school record for wins in a season while obtaining its highest RPI during the Division I era. The program also welcomes in a total of eight newcomers.

Defending conference co-regular season and tournament champion High Point has been picked as the favorite to win the league after garnering 112 points and seven first-place votes. Longwood and Campbell both received one first-place vote and are second and third, respectively, with 106 and 102 points. Radford comes in fourth with two first-place votes and 92 points.

Charleston Southern and Gardner-Webb follow in fifth and sixth places with 69 and 67 points. Winthrop sits in front of USC Upstate in seventh place with 52 points. UNC Asheville (9th, 36 points), Presbyterian College (10th, 27 points) and Hampton (11th, 15 points) round out the preseason poll.

In addition, the coaches voted Campbell junior forward Alexa Genas the Preseason Attacking Player of the Year and Longwood senior defender Sydney Wallace the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

The Spartans open their 2018 season on Monday, August 13 at 7 p.m. hosting Spartanburg Methodist in an exhibition game. The regular season begins on Friday, August 17 as USC Upstate hosts USC Beaufort at 7 p.m.
