Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's soccer team was honored for their efforts during the 2017 season as the team claimed multiple awards at The Sparty's Awards Banquet presented by Coca-Cola last week.
Highlighting the list of award winners was junior Kayla Dean, who earned the Sportsmanship Award. The award is selected by an awards committee consisting of USC Upstate athletic department staff members.
The women's soccer team had seven student-athletes honored as members of Chi Alpha Sigma Honors Fraternity. They include Dean, Emma Safranek, Nicki Krejci, Abbie Ellis, Autumn Gore, Emelie Valenciano and Isabella Burns.
USC Upstate's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) named the women's soccer team as its Most Improved Team. The Spartans went 6-10-1 last year, setting a Division I era record for most wins in a season.
Head coach Tyson John handed out five team awards. Ellis earned the Golden Boot award, with Krejci claiming Defensive Player of the Year honors. Valenciano was tabbed as the Most Valuable Player. Freshman Samantha Munyon earned Newcomer of the Year honors. Jayna Tyler was chosen as the team's Most Improved Player.
USC Upstate will begin the 2018 season in mid-August.
