Women’s Golf Preview:  at Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic

Spartanburg, S.C. – For the second consecutive week, the USC Upstate women's golf team is on the course as the Spartans travel to Kiawah Island, S.C., February 24-26, for the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic from par 72, 5964-yard Osprey Point Golf Club and par 72, 5941-yard Oak Point Golf Club.

Tabbed as the largest collegiate golf tournament in the country, the 2019 edition of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic has been expanded to 48 participating teams and will be played for the fifth time in its history at Osprey Point at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort.

Two courses are used for the three-day, 54-hole tournament including Oak Point. After 36 holes of play, the top 24 teams will play for the championship at Osprey Point during the final round, while teams 25-48 will play for a flight championship at Oak Point.

The Spartans are sending out a five-player lineup consisting of Beem Pabsimma, Brooke Hutto, Pan Paksanont, Anna Chanthaphaeng and Kathryn Elliott.

USC Upstate began its spring season last week at the Amelia Island Collegiate led individually by Hutto who finished in a tie for 30th place. Hutto led the Spartans in par 3 scoring (+1, 3.08 stroke average), par 4 scoring (4.23 stroke average) and birdies (7). Paksanont had a team-best 5.17 stroke average in par 5 scoring and 35 pars. The Spartans finished the tournament with a 3.37 stroke average in par 3 scoring, 4.45 stroke average in par 4 scoring, 5.48 stroke average in par 5 scoring, 147 pars and 19 birdies.

USC Upstate captured the Oak Point Championship last season, its first tournament win in 11 years, at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic while Paksanont collected individual medalist honors. Paksanont became the first Spartan women's golfer since Richia Wedzik in 2006 to capture individual medalist accolades.
