Women’s Basketball Preview:  High Point

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's basketball team will take the court for the first time in 18 days against High Point at 2 p.m., on Saturday afternoon at the Eddie and Ann Payne Arena inside the G.B. Hodge Center.

This will be the fourth all-time meeting between USC Upstate (4-7) and High Point (7-4). The Panthers currently hold a 2-1 edge in the series with the last game being played in 2013, with High Point winning 75-69. The Spartans last win over the Panthers was a 90-61 triumph in 1990.

When USC Upstate and High Point meet on Saturday afternoon it will be meeting between the top scoring offenses in the Big South. The Panthers currently average 72.9 points per contest, while the Spartans average 68.3 points. The two teams also hold the highest field goal percentages in the league, with High Point shooting 42.3 percent from the field and USC Upstate 39.3 percent.

The last time the Spartans took the floor they came away with a 71-53 win over Brevard College on Dec 18. Riley Popplewell scored 20 points for just the second time in her career and finished a rebound shy of her fourth consecutive double-double. Popplewell also tied a career-high in blocks [3] and steals [5]. Michaela Gibbons finished the game with 14 points off the bench and was a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe during the game. The 6-for-6 night at the free throw line set new career-highs for Gibbons in free throws made and free throws attempted. DeNisha Swain added 11 points and tied a career-high in steals with six.

USC Upstate currently has three players averaging double-figures in games this season. Brianna Lewis not only leads the team, but the Big South, with 20.5 points per game, which ranks 19th nationally. Lewis also leads the Big South in assists [65], assists per game [5.9] and minutes played [38:06]. Popplewell is currently second on the team averaging 11.2 points per contest and ranks second in the Big South in rebounding average with 9.0 boards per game. Swain is averaging 10.5 points per game and is second in the Big South in steals per game [3.18].

High Point is currently riding a three-game winning streak dating back to December 15, 2018. The Panthers most recent victory was a 73-65 road win against East Tennessee State.

Emma Bockrath leads High Point in points per game [17.0], rebounds [7.1] and steals [35]. Lindsey Edwards is presently second on the team in scoring, averaging 12.3 points per contest. Brown sits in third averaging 10.7 points per game. Brown also leads the team with 50 assists.
