Women’s Basketball Preview:  at East Carolina

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's basketball team returns to the road on Sunday afternoon traveling to Greenville, N.C. for a 2 p.m. tipoff against the East Carolina Pirates at Minges Coliseum.

USC Upstate hosted Bob Jones last Saturday in its second home game of the season and eclipsed the century mark for the first time this year in a 101-53 victory. A total of eight players finished in double-figures scoring led by double-doubles from Brianna Lewis, Riley Popplewell and Michaela Gibbons. Lewis dished out a career-high 10 assists in the game while Gibbons added a career-best 10 rebounds and Kathryn Kirkwood a career-high 12 points.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 50.0 percent from the field and held a 58-28 advantage in rebounds. USC Upstate also led 54-22 in points in the paint, 23-7 in points off turnovers, 20-2 in second chance points and 16-0 in fast break points.

Popplewell was rewarded for her performance last week on Monday by being named the Big South Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

Lewis is one of three Spartans averaging in double-figures this season with a team-high 22.1 points per game. DeNisha Swain averages 11.0 points while Popplewell adds 10.1 and a team-leading 8.3 rebounds per game. Lewis also dishes out a team-best 6.6 assists per game.

East Carolina is 6-2 this season following a 66-63 victory over Liberty on Thursday. The Pirates are led by Raven Johnson with 14.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Lashonda Monk contributes 13.4 points per game. East Carolina is under the direction of interim head coach Chad Killinger.

USC Upstate is facing the Pirates for the second time in program history with East Carolina holding a 1-0 lead in the all-time series.
