Women’s Basketball Preview:  at N.C. Central

Spartanburg, S.C. - The USC Upstate women's basketball team continues its four-game road trip on Saturday afternoon as the Spartans travel to Durham, N.C. for a 3 p.m. tipoff against the N.C. Central Eagles at McDougald-McLendon Arena.

USC Upstate (1-4) is back in action for the first time since Nov. 17 after dropping a 78-67 non-conference decision at Furman. Brianna Lewis led four Spartans in double-figures scoring a team-high 18 points to go with seven assists. Michaela Gibbons set a new career-high with 14 points. DeNisha Swain contributed 12 points while Natalia Panufnik added 10.

Lewis leads the Big South in scoring this season averaging a team-high 21.6 points per game. She is also first in the conference with 6.0 assists per game. Riley Popplewell leads the team in rebounding with 6.0 per game.

N.C. Central currently sits at 0-5 on the season after falling 89-82 on Nov. 20 against UNC Wilmington. Paulina Afriyie leads the team with 9.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. The Eagles are under the direction of second-year head coach Trisha Stafford-Odom.

USC Upstate is facing N.C. Central for the eighth time in program history with the Spartans holding a 5-2 lead in the all-time series. USC Upstate has won each of the past four meetings including a 66-61 victory last season in Spartanburg.
