Women’s Basketball Preview:  Converse

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's basketball team will play its first home game of the season on Tuesday evening hosting the Converse College Valkyries at 6 p.m. from Eddie and Ann Payne Arena in the G.B. Hodge Center.

USC Upstate closed out a three-game season-opening road trip last weekend with two losses against the Omaha Mavericks and Nebraska Cornhuskers. At Omaha, DeNisha Swain scored a career-high 22 points while Brianna Lewis added 20. Riley Popplewell finished with a team-high five rebounds. Lewis led three Spartans in double-figures against Nebraska with a career-high 26 points. Swain contributed 11 points while Natalia Panufnik scored 10. Popplewell led USC Upstate defensively with seven rebounds and Michaela Gibbons added six. 

Lewis leads the Spartans this season averaging 21.0 points per game while Swain adds 12.0 per contest. Lewis ranks second in the Big South in both scoring and assists. Swain sits third in the conference for steals. Popplewell leads the team with 5.7 rebounds per game.

Converse won its season-opener, 74-55, against Mars Hill on Nov. 10. Abigail Lewis scored a game-high 20 points to go along with eight rebounds to lead the Valkyries. Converse is under the direction of fourth-year head coach Dean Walsh.

USC Upstate is facing the Valkyries for the 37th time in program history and leads the all-time series 32-4. The Spartans have won each of the last 21 meetings.
