Spartanburg, S.C. – The 29th, and final, regular season game in 2017-18 for the USC Upstate women's basketball team will take place on Saturday as the Spartans host NJIT at 1 p.m. at Eddie and Ann Payne Arena in the G.B. Hodge Center.
The contest will serve as Senior Day as A'Lexxus Davis and Brittney Delva will be honored prior to the game.
USC Upstate is 10-18 overall and 5-8 in the ASUN following a 79-61 road loss to North Florida on Monday. Riley Popplewell tied a career-high with 17 points while Delva and Tamera Thorpe each finished with 11. DeNisha Swain scored seven points off the bench and had four steals.
Thorpe leads the team with 11.8 points per game this season while Davis is the top rebounder with 5.6 per game.
Popplewell was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team on Thursday. The Union Mills, Ind. native is an Elementary Education major with a 4.00 GPA. The Union Mills, Ind. native is one of five players to be named to the Academic All-District IV Team, which consists of student-athletes from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Puerto Rico and South Carolina. She is the only ASUN representative on the team and is now eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.
NJIT is 4-24 overall and 2-11 league play after dropping a 73-53 decision at Jacksonville on Monday. The Highlanders earned both of their league wins against North Florida. Kelly Guarino leads the team with an average of 11.9 points per game with Tatianna Torres also averaging double figures at 11.3 per game. Danielle Tunstall leads the team with 5.3 rebounds per game.
The Spartans lead the all-time series 4-1 after winning the ASUN opener 95-57 in Newark on Jan. 6.
