Radford, Va. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team began postseason play in impressive fashion on Wednesday morning as the eighth-seeded Spartans swept the No. 9 seed Hampton Pirates 4-0 in the first round of the Big South Men's Tennis Championship at the Radford Tennis Complex.

The Spartans improve to 3-16 on the season while Hampton falls to 1-17 overall.

USC Upstate records its first conference tournament win since 2016 when it defeated Florida Gulf Coast 4-3 in Spartanburg to advance to the ASUN Men's Tennis Championship match.

The Spartans got on the board first capturing the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead over the Pirates.

Samuel Schiano and Frederick Sydow recorded the first win for USC Upstate earning a victory by forfeit in the No. 3 match.

In the No. 1 match, the combination of Ankush Arora and Fernando Bernardes secured the doubles point with a 6-1 win over Luke Thompson and Davy Van Geerke. It was the team-leading sixth doubles victory of the season for Arora and Bernardes, who were named Second Team All-Conference Doubles on Tuesday.

The Spartans registered singles wins at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6 to register the 4-0 victory.

Schiano quickly gave USC Upstate a 2-0 lead after winning his No. 6 singles match by forfeit.

Arora, who was also named Big South Second Team All-Conference Singles on Tuesday, extended the Spartans lead to 3-0 with his straight set victory at No. 1 over Van Geerke. Arora won the match 6-3, 6-1 for his team-leading seventh win of the season.

Sydow gave USC Upstate the 4-0 match victory at No. 4 singles as he defeated Basil Post in straight sets by a score of 6-1, 6-3. It was the third singles win for Sydow this season.

"I'm just really happy for these guys to get this win under our belt. This team has been through a bunch of adversity this year whether dealing with injuries, illness or weather, and really not being able to practice much because of that stuff.  I'm glad for them that they could experience winning a match in the postseason. We didn't play that great today, and I think a lot of that was our nerves and Hampton putting some pressure on us, but we were able to fight through that and take care of business. We've got a tough match against a good Gardner-Webb team tomorrow but we know we've got enough to take them down. It's going to be an intense battle, like it always is against them, but I know our guys are ready to pull the upset." – Tim McLane, head coach

The Spartans advance to the quarterfinals of the Big South Men's Tennis Championship and will face top-seeded Gardner-Webb on Thursday morning at 9 a.m.
