USC Upstate Tops Hampton 6-1 for First Big South Victory

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team picked up its first conference victory of the season on Sunday as the Spartans defeated the Hampton Pirates 6-1 at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.

USC Upstate improves to 2-15 on the season and 1-6 in Big South play while Hampton falls to 1-13 overall and 0-5 in conference play.

The Spartans captured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to take a 1-0 lead over the Pirates.

In the No. 3 match, the combination of Samuel Schiano and Frederick Sydow got things started after winning by forfeit. Ankush Arora and Fernando Bernardes, playing at No. 1, captured the point for USC Upstate after defeating Davy Van Geerke and Luke Thompson 6-3.

The No. 2 match had Luka Eble and Francisco Neto leading Charles Hudson and Fernando Fernandes 5-4 but went unfinished.

The Spartans continued their momentum into singles play securing five of the six matches for the 6-1 victory. USC Upstate received victories from Arora at No. 1, Bernardes at No. 3, Eble at No. 4, Sydow at No. 5 and Tom Russwurm at No. 6.

Russwurm recorded the first singles point for the Spartans after winning his No. 6 match by forfeit while Arora earned a win by retirement at No. 1 after taking the first set 6-2.

Eble, Bernardes and Sydow followed with three straight-set victories to close out the match. Eble, playing at No. 4, defeated Hudson 6-1, 6-2 and Bernardes registered a 6-3, 6-0 win over Fernandes at No. 3. Sydow finished at No. 5 with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Basil Post.

We haven't been 100% healthy this year which makes winning this match even more important. USC Upstate closes out its regular season on Friday, April 12 hosting Longwood at 4 p.m. on Senior Day.
