Elon, N.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team continued its 10-match road trip on Thursday afternoon falling 7-0 in non-conference play to the Elon Phoenix.

The first half of the match began at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center before rain forced the second half to be moved indoors to the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center in Greensboro, N.C.

USC Upstate falls to 1-10 on the season while Elon improves to 13-4 overall.

The Phoenix secured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to go ahead of the Spartans 1-0. The No. 2 doubles match featuring Ankush Arora and Luka Eble went unfinished.

Elon would then go on to win all six singles matches to compile the 7-0 victory. Tom Russwurm, playing at No. 5 singles, sent his match against Taylor Foote into the third set. Russwurm began the match winning the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (8-6) before Foote captured the second 6-3. Foote would go on to win the third set 1-0 (10-4).

"I thought our guys did a good job adjusting mentally to the situation; planning to play indoors, then playing outside, then finally going inside after the rain. That's tough to deal with but I thought we did a good job preparing ourselves each time. Freddie, Tom and Sam have to play higher in the lineup than they ever have but I thought they battled nicely. Elon is a very good team but I thought our guys competed well dealing with adversity, but in the end we got out-played by a better team." – Tim McLane, head coach

USC Upstate is back on the road Sunday afternoon at UNC Greensboro for a 1 p.m. match.
