USC Upstate Splits Season-Opening Doubleheader at Belmont Abbey, Queens (N.C.)

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team began its 2019 season on Saturday splitting a non-conference doubleheader on the road against the Belmont Abbey Crusaders and Queens (N.C.) Royals.

USC Upstate opened the day with a 7-0 sweep at Belmont Abbey before falling 4-3 in the finale against Queens (N.C.).

The Spartans move to 1-1 on the season while the Crusaders drop to 2-4 overall and the Royals are 1-0.

That being said, we definitely had plenty of opportunities that we just didn't capitalize on. USC Upstate began the day with a 7-0 sweep of Belmont Abbey from Reidy Tennis Center in Belmont, N.C.

The Spartans took an early 1-0 lead in the match after sweeping all three doubles matches. The No. 1 doubles combination of Ankush Arora and Lucas Percy earned a 6-2 victory against Tomas Pardo and Jacob Andress. Luka Eble and Francisco Neto, playing at No. 2 doubles, and the No. 3 pairing of Fernando Bernardes and Frederick Sydow both swept their matches by 6-0 scores. Eble and Neto topped Blaise Waters and Mike Nguyen while Bernardes and Sydow defeated Phillip Katta and Adam Nesnow.

USC Upstate continued its momentum into singles play with six straight set victories to capture the 7-0 win. Tom Russwurm, playing in his first collegiate match, picked up a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 6 position. Arora won by a score of 6-2, 6-2 playing at No. 1 and Neto followed at No. 2 with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph. In the No. 3 match, Eble recorded a 6-1, 6-1 win. Bernardes (No. 4) and Sydow (No. 5) won with scores of 6-2, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-2.

The Spartans closed out the day with a 4-3 defeat to Queens (N.C.) from the Howard Levine Tennis Center in Charlotte, N.C.

USC Upstate went down to the final doubles match to secure the point and take a 1-0 lead. The Spartans earned doubles wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Arora and Percy got things started by winning 6-4 over Paolo Bompieri and Joel Dunlap in the No. 1 match. After falling at No. 2, USC Upstate secured the doubles point at No. 3 as Bernardes and Sydow held off Agustin Aran Martin and Sebastian Meum 7-6(7).

The Royals then came back in singles play to capture four matches to win 4-3. The Spartans picked up wins from Neto at No. 2 and Bernardes at No. 5. Bernardes defeated Mathias Degardin in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 playing at No. 5 while Neto secured a straight set victory against Aran Martin 6-4, 6-1.

USC Upstate travels to Greenville, S.C. on Saturday, February 9 for an 11 a.m. match against Furman.
