Men’s Tennis Preview:  at Belmont Abbey, Queens (N.C.)

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team officially begins its 2019 season on Saturday traveling to Belmont Abbey and Queens (N.C.) for a non-conference doubleheader. The Spartans begin the day at 10 a.m. against Belmont Abbey before traveling to Queens (N.C.) for a 3 p.m. match.

USC Upstate was originally scheduled to begin its season on January 21 at Coastal Carolina but was postponed due to weather.

The Spartans were tabbed to finish seventh in the Big South Men's Tennis Preseason Poll after finishing last season with a 6-18 overall record. USC Upstate returns seven letterwinners in Ankush Arora, Fernando Bernardes, Luka Eble, Francisco Neto, Lucas Percy, Tom Russwurm and Samuel Schiano. The Spartans also welcome one newcomer in freshman Frederick Sydow.

Bernardes led USC Upstate in singles play last season with nine wins while Eble contributed eight and Neto seven.

Belmont Abbey (2-0) earned two victories during the fall against Charleston (W.V.) and No. 19 Bluefield State. The Crusaders begin their spring season on Friday against Presbyterian and USC Aiken.

Queens (N.C.) opens its spring season on Saturday against the Spartans. The Royals fell at Winthrop in an exhibition match, 6-1, on January 25. Queens finished last season with a 13-5 overall record and went 9-1 in the South Atlantic Conference.

The Spartans travel to Furman next Saturday, February 9 for an 11 a.m. match at Furman.
