Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team will play a total of 21 matches this season as interim head coach Tim McLane announced the schedule for the upcoming 2019 campaign this afternoon.
The Spartans are slated to play a total of six matches at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex and eight during their first season in the Big South Conference. USC Upstate opens its season on January 21 with a doubleheader at Coastal Carolina.
"Obviously we're excited to join the Big South, and a lot of the healthy rivalries we had with some programs nearby have now become conference rivalries, so we're looking forward to those being pretty intense matches," said McLane. "We also will be playing some of the better mid-major teams in the Southeast, so our non-conference schedule is definitely going to test us, but it's a schedule I feel we can be rather successful against."
The Spartans play five of their first seven matches on the road to begin the year starting at Coastal Carolina. USC Upstate then travels to Belmont Abbey and Queens (February 2) and Furman (February 9).
The Spartans host Winthrop (February 15) and Hampton (February 17) in their first home, and Big South, matches of the season. Following the home and conference openers, USC Upstate hits the road for four consecutive matches, including three in conference play, with Presbyterian (February 20), Chattanooga (February 23), Radford (March 1) and Campbell (March 2).
Following a home match with South Carolina State on March 9, the Spartans return to the road for six straight matches starting on March 11 at Mercer. After facing North Dakota (March 13) and Bethune-Cookman (March 16) in the state of Florida, USC Upstate heads to North Carolina for three matches versus Elon (March 21), UNC Greensboro (March 24) and UNC Asheville (March 27).
The Spartans close out the season with three straight home matches against Gardner-Webb (April 4), Wofford (April 5) and Longwood (April 12).
The 2019 Big South Men's Tennis Championship will be held April 17-20 in Radford, Va.
