Schiano, Russwurm Shine for USC Upstate at Mercer Gridiron Classic

Macon, Ga. – Samuel Schiano and Tom Russwurm teamed up to advance to the finals of doubles play to lead the USC Upstate men's tennis team this past weekend at the Mercer Gridiron Classic in Macon, Ga.

Schiano and Russwurm combined to make it to the finals of the Flight B Doubles Consolation bracket with two victories. After falling in their opening match of the Flight B Doubles bracket, the duo came back with a 7-5 victory in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket against Alvaro Arias and Hikaru Negoshi of Florida Southern. They would advance to the championship match after defeating Jordan Mark and John Wharton of Mercer 6-4 in the semifinals.

Fernando Bernardes/Lucas Percy and Luka Eble/Francisco Neto both collected doubles wins in the Flight A Doubles bracket. Bernardes/Percy topped Valentine Hertweck and Oscar Sohl of Florida Southern 7-5 while Eble/Neto won 7-5 against Federico Nani and Dominik Barton of North Florida.

Neto, Percy and Luka Eble all secured one singles victory during the weekend. Playing in the Flight A bracket, Neto defeated Arias in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. Eble won 6-4, 6-2 over Chris Andre of Alabama State in the Flight B Singles bracket. Percy added a 6-4, 6-1 triumph against Ryosuke Sowa of Jacksonville in the Flight B Singles Consolation 2 bracket.

The Spartans return to action Oct. 12-16 at the ITA Regionals in Cary, N.C.
