Newark, N.J. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team began the ASUN portion of its schedule on Saturday morning and dropped a 6-1 decision on the road to the NJIT Highlanders from The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.

USC Upstate falls to 3-13 on the season and 0-1 in conference play while NJIT improves to 9-4 overall and 1-0 in the league.

The Highlanders jumped out to a 1-0 lead after capturing two of the three doubles matches at No. 2 and No. 3. The No. 1 doubles combination of Ignacio Garrido and Lucas Percy defeated Jan Cimrman and Abdullah Fouad 6-3.

NJIT would go on to win five of the six singles matches to capture the 6-1 victory.

Percy earned his first career win as a Spartan following a straight set 6-3, 6-4 triumph against Richard Rangga in the No. 6 singles match.

USC Upstate sent three of the six singles matches into the third set with Felix Ewers at No. 1, Francisco Neto at No. 2 and Garrido at No. 5.

"Today was obviously not the result we were looking for. I thought we played fairly decent tennis, but it's just a tough situation to deal with having to go indoors against a team who specializes playing indoor tennis. We definitely came away with a couple of tough lessons learned, but it's going to help us prep for a couple of home conference matches coming up." – Tim McLane, assistant coach

The Spartans return home next week for a pair of conference matches beginning on Thursday, March 29 at 2 p.m. against Stetson.
