Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team won the doubles point for the second straight match, while Felix Ewers earned a win in singles play, as the Spartans dropped a 5-2 decision to the Elon Phoenix in non-conference play Wednesday afternoon from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.

USC Upstate falls to 3-12 on the season while Elon improves to 11-5 overall.

The Spartans jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. After the Phoenix captured the first doubles match, the No. 2 combination of Ignacio Garrido and Lucas Percy earned a 6-3 win over Felipe Sarrasague and Louis Rico. Ewers and Luka Eble, playing at No. 3, gave USC Upstate the doubles point following their 6-3 win over Camilo Ponce and Taylor Foote.

Elon would win five of the six singles matches to record the 5-2 victory.

Ewers picked up a three-set win in his No. 1 singles match topping Sarrasague 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 for his fourth victory of the season. Playing at No. 3 singles, Ankush Arora sent his match into the third set versus Kyle Frankel but fell 6-0, 3-6, 3-6.

"We started off great at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. They each played great matches and were able to get us off to a 1-0 start. During the singles matches we gave ourselves plenty of chances, but against a team as good as Elon, you have to take advantage when you get a good position. All-in-all, this was a great match against one of the best teams in our region that will help get us ready for NJIT to open up conference play." – Tim McLane, assistant coach

The Spartans begin conference play this weekend when they travel north to NJIT on Saturday, March 24 for a 9 a.m. match against the Highlanders.
