Upstate Returns to Action this Weekend at Mercer Gridiron Classic

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team resumes its fall schedule this weekend as the Spartans travel to Macon, Ga. for the Mercer Gridiron Classic. The tournament begins Friday and lasts through Sunday with four singles divisions and two doubles divisions. The Spartans will send seven players to the tournament.

In addition to tournament host Mercer, Upstate is joined by Alabama State, Austin Peay, Bethune-Cookman, Chattanooga, Florida Southern, Georgia College, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Jacksonville State, Kennesaw State, Middle Georgia, North Georgia, Radford and Troy.

Felix Ewers is seeded sixth in the Buccaneers singles division and will open the tournament against Ryan Gaskin of North Georgia. Aknush Arora joins Ewers in the Buccaneers division and will play Florida Southern's Victor Ahlbeck in the opening round.

Upstate will have three players in the Jets singles division in Fernando Bernardes, Ignacio Garrido and Francisco Neto. Garrido is the sixth seed and will face Pablo Llebeili of Chattanooga in the opening round. Bernardes starts singles play against Jordi Blanchar of Jacksonville State while Neto opens with Kennesaw State's Corey Smith.

Luka Eble is the fifth seed in the Panthers singles division bracket. Eble has a first round bye and will play the winner of the match between Lennart Vossgaetter of Florida Southern and Alejandro Prada of Middle Georgia.

Samuel Schiano will compete in the Raiders division and opens singles play against Brian Wilson of Florida Southern.

In doubles play, the pairing of Ewers and Garrido are the sixth seed and have a bye in the opening round of play in the Cowboys division while Arora and Bernardes will face Alvaro Arias and Brian Wilson of Florida Southern. In the Dolphins division, Eble and Neto are the fifth seed and have a bye in the first round.

Upstate is back in action Oct. 12-15 at the ITA Regionals in Durham, N.C.
