PORTLAND, Ore. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team used a late rally Sunday afternoon at the University of Portland to create a 3-3 tie in singles play, but the Pilots took the final and decisive match to pick up the 4-3 victory at the Lewis & Clark Courts in non-conference action.

The Spartans (2-2) came up on the short end of a 4-3 decision for the first time this season, while the Pilots (1-1) earn their first win of the year.

In doubles action, Matthias Kidler and Viktor Selander cruised to an 8-0 victory at No. 2 doubles, and Jamie Yates and Jacob Darling dropped an 8-5 decision at No. 3, leaving the doubles point up to the No. 1 slot.

Gonzalo Blanco and Yvon Haessig had a thriller on their hands, tied 7-7 with Ratan Gill and Alex Ferrero with a seven-point tiebreaker to decide the match and the doubles point. The Portland duo would come out on top 7-4 in the tiebreaker to take the match 8-7 and the all-important doubles point.

The Pilots made quick work of the Spartans at No. 2 and No. 3 singles to take a commanding 3-0 lead with four matches still in play.

With Portland needing just one point to clinch the match, Upstate stayed on the courts and extended several crucial matches to allow the Spartans to creep back in and make it interesting. Selander rallied from down a set and emerged with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles, while Kidler followed and did the same in dramatic fashion, winning 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) at the No. 1 spot.

Yates would capitalize on the momentum shift moments later and take down Deuel 6-3, 2-6, 10-4 at the No. 5 slot to knot the score at 3-3 and shift all the attention to the final match at No. 6 singles.

Carlos Tajes would put up a fight, but Portland's Martin proved to be too much for the freshman in the end, winning 6-3, 6-2 to send the Pilots to their first victory of the season.

The Spartans return home next Saturday to face Gardner-Webb at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. against the Bulldogs.
