THIBODAUX, La. – Two days after a heartbreaking loss at No. 72 Tulane, the USC Upstate men's tennis team bounced back with a 5-2 victory over Nicholls State Tuesday.
In doubles action, the Spartans claimed two of three matches to take a 1-0 advantage in the match. Matthias Kidler and Ramiro Blanco were victorious at doubles No. 1, while Jacob Darling and Gonzalo Blanco claimed victory at doubles No. 3.
Four of the six singles matches were decided in the third set Tuesday. After picking up a 6-4 win in the first set, Ramiro Blanco dropped the second set to Damjan Despotovski, 2-6. Blanco won the decisive third set, 6-2, to claim the singles No. 1 match.
Matthias Kidler, playing at singles No. 2, won in three sets as he claimed a 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 win over Shayann Vaezzadeh. Gonzalo Blanco battled back after dropping set one, 2-6, at singles No. 5. Blanco won set two, 7-5, and outlasted Roy Knight, 15-13, in the final set.
Yvon Haessing picked up a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Palash Tiwari at singles No. 4.
The Spartans will return to the courts Saturday when they host Maryland-Baltimore County.
