Men’s Soccer Preview:  Campbell

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's soccer team remains in Big South play on Tuesday evening as the Spartans open the home portion of their schedule hosting the Campbell Camels at 7 p.m. from County University Soccer Stadium.

USC Upstate's debut in the Big South Conference last Friday was a memorable one as it earned a 2-0 victory at UNC Asheville. Playing in his first game of the season, Cam Philpot led the Spartans offensively with five shots, including three on goal, and scored his first goal of the year. Erik Espinoza also scored his first goal of the season. Joel Bunting, Michelangelo Dovidio, Jaedon Williamson and Sebastian Quinteros all had one assist. Andrea Bonavia, making his first career start, recorded the shutout and grabbed one save.

Philpot, Espinoza and Solomon Constant all lead USC Upstate offensively this season with two points on one goal. Five different players have dished out one assist apiece. Bonavia has one shutout in goal while CJ Cluck adds four saves.

Campbell is 1-2 this season coming off a 5-2 win over Belmont last Saturday. Ian Rees and Gideon Betz lead the team offensively with two goals while Bastien Oberli has dished out two assists. In goal, Samuel Lechuga has 10 saves and allowed four goals for a 2.00 GAA. The Camels are under the direction of fourth-year head coach Dustin Fonder.

The Spartans are facing Campbell for the first time since Oct. 2, 2010 when the Camels picked up a 1-0 win at County University Soccer Stadium. Campbell leads the all-time series 5-1.

The Spartans are off until Wednesday, Sept. 12 when they remain in conference play traveling to Gardner-Webb for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
