USC Upstate Falls to Gardner-Webb in Big South Match Play Semifinals

Ninety Six, S.C. – The second-seeded USC Upstate men's golf team fell to the No. 3 seed Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs 3-2 on Saturday in the match play semifinals of the Big South Men's Golf Championship from the par 72, 7120-yard The Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor.

This was the first year that the Big South has added match play to the Men's Golf Championship. The Spartans were the No. 2 seed in match play after finishing second during stroke play with a combined score of 870.

USC Upstate improved its position in four of the five matches on Saturday, which were halted yesterday due to weather, but wasn't enough at the end. The Spartans received wins from Hunter Fry and Matt Carter.

"To say this season was special is an understatement," said head coach Todd Lawton. "So many good team records and individual performances. The emotions all of us expressed on our last green were overwhelming and a blessing too. They all left everything out there physically and with their hearts. Today was just Gardner-Webb's day. Hats off to them for great play and a great match. We will all miss Matt but he has left a legacy worth remembering. He's a Spartan for life. That's what it's all about!"

Fry defeated Patrick Wu 4&2 in the No. 2 match. Teeing off on the tenth hole, the junior took the lead after the first hole and held a one-hole lead until the 13th. He took the lead back on the 15th and followed by winning the 16th. Fry held a two-hole lead until capturing the sixth and seventh to secure the match victory.

Carter concluded his USC Upstate career defeating Andy Yang 3&2 playing at the No. 3 position. Carter also teed off on the tenth hole and traded the opening four holes. The match would be tied until the 18th when Carter took the lead for good. Carter would go on to win the first, third and fourth holes to lead by four. Yang won the sixth hole but Carter ended the match on the seventh for the victory.
