Men’s Basketball Preview: Georgia Tech

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's basketball team will travel to Atlanta, Ga. tomorrow evening to take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in the final non-conference game of the season.


This is the second ever meeting between USC Upstate (5-9) and Georgia Tech (7-5). Upstate won the only other meeting 59-54 on December 6, 2014. The game was deadlocked at 28 going into halftime, the Spartans outscored the Yellow Jackets 31-26 to escape Atlanta with the victory. Three USC Upstate players finished the game in double figures against Georgia Tech. Ty Greene led the Spartans with 16 points, while Shunquez Stephens added 13 points and Josh Cuthbertson added 12 points off the bench.


USC Upstate is coming off an 89-69 victory over Coker College. A win tomorrow night would give the Spartans just their second winning streak of the season. Senior guard Malik Moore scored a career high 33 points and hauled in a season high 12 rebounds in route to his fourth double-double of the season. Freshman forward Ross Ryan added a career high 10 points and was the only other Spartan to reach double-figures in the contest.


The Spartans shot an even 50 percent for the game and 47 percent from beyond the three point arch. USC Upstate bullied Coker down low, outscoring Coker 40-36 in the paint. The Spartans had 12 steals in the game and scored 34 points off of Cobra turnovers.


Moore currently leads the Spartan offense in points per game 17.1, rebounds per game 6.9 and minutes per game 29.5. Fellow senior Deion Holmes is second on the team in points per game with 14.0 and Jure Span leads the team with 50 assists.


The Yellow Jackets are coming off an 87-57 victory over Kennesaw State. A quintet of Georgia Tech players finished in double figures led by Abdoulaye Gueye with 16 points. The Yellow Jackets shot 56 percent for the game and 36 percent from beyond the three point arch.


Jose Alvarado and Brandon Alston currently lead the Yellow Jackets offense. Alvarado is currently averaging 13.6 points per game and Alston is averaging 10.2 points per contest. James Banks III is averaging 8.8 rebounds per contest is shooting a team high 58.2 percent from the field.
