SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the first time in 20 years USC Upstate and Coker College will face off against one another at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon from the Eddie and Ann Payne Arena located inside the G.B. Hodge Center.
The Spartans hold a 7-3 record in the All-Time series over the Cobras. Coker won the last matchup between the two squads 76-63 back in 1998. USC Upstate's (4-9) last win in the series came in 1989 when both teams were still in the NAIA. The Spartans are 4-1 All-Time against the Cobras inside the G.B. Hodge Center.
USC Upstate had a short break for Christmas following a 98-71 loss to N.C. State last Saturday. The loss ended a two game winning streak for the Spartans. For the second consecutive game USC Upstate had five or more players finish the game in double-figures. Pat Welch dropped a career high 14 points to lead the Spartans in scoring. Everette Hammond scored 13 points, while Malik Moore, Deion Holmes, Nevin Zink and Brandon Martin all contributed 10 points in the loss to the Wolfpack. Hammond set a new career high in assists and Martin set a new career high in steals.
Moore and Holmes continue to be the top scoring options for the Spartans this season. Moore is currently averaging 15.8 points per game and is currently shooting 50 percent from the field. Holmes is averaging 14.7 points per contest and is shooting close to 40 percent from beyond the three point arch. Jure Span currently leads the team with 45 assists on the season.
Coker enters the non-conference matchup with a 2-8 overall record and are currently riding a four game losing streak. The Cobras last win came on November 29th against Limestone. Senior guard Khalil Halls leads the team in scoring, averaging 19.1 points per game. Larry Cooper is the only other Cobra averaging double-figures at 10.1 points per contest.
