Men’s Basketball Preview:  Gardner-Webb

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's basketball team returns to the Eddie and Ann Payne Arena in the G.B. Hodge Center for the first time in over two weeks on Wednesday evening as it hosts the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs in non-conference play at 7 p.m.

USC Upstate (1-5) is coming off a five-game road trip capped by three at the Classic at Portland Nov. 21-24. Deion Holmes, playing in his first games of the season, was named to the Classic at Portland All-Tournament Team after leading the team with 11.0 points per game and contributed 6.0 rebounds. Malik Moore added 9.7 points and a team-high 6.3 rebounds per game.

Holmes registered his 19th career game scoring 20 or more points after recording 20 against Portland. He then had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds in the finale versus Cal Poly. Bryson Mozone finished with a career-high 22 points against Cal Poly.

Moore and Holmes are averaging 13.7 and 11.0 points per game, respectively, this season to lead the Spartans offensively. Moore leads the team in rebounding with 6.2 per game while Holmes contributes 6.0. Jure Span is dishing out a team-high 4.2 assists per game.

Gardner-Webb (2-5) is coming off a 77-69 defeat against Arkansas State on Nov. 25. The Runnin' Bulldogs are led offensively by David Efianayi with 17.6 points per game. Christian Turner leads the team with 3.4 assists per game while Eric Jamison Jr. and Jaheam Cornwall are both averaging 5.3 rebounds per contest. Gardner-Webb is under the direction of fifth-year head coach Tim Craft. 

The Spartans are facing Gardner-Webb for the 23rd time in program history with USC Upstate leading the all-time series 12-10.
