Men’s Basketball Preview:  at South Carolina

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's basketball team officially begins the 2018-19 season, as well as the Dave Dickerson era, on Tuesday evening as the Spartans make the short trip to Columbia, S.C. to face the South Carolina Gamecocks at 7 p.m. from Colonial Life Arena.

Dickerson was named the tenth head coach in program history on April 5, 2018.

USC Upstate returns a total of six letterwinners from last season highlighted by three starters in Malik Moore, Jure Span and Deion Holmes. Holmes was a Big South Second Team Preseason All-Conference selection this year after averaging a career-high 15.5 points per game in 2017-18. Moore sits just 36 points away from joining the Spartans 1,000 point club while Span averaged a team-leading 4.1 assists per game last season.

USC Upstate also welcomes eight freshmen newcomers to the 2018-19 roster.

South Carolina finished 17-16 overall last season and 7-11 in the SEC. The Gamecocks return all five starters from last year and seven total letterwinners. South Carolina is under the direction of seventh-year head coach Frank Martin.

The Spartans and Gamecocks are meeting for the fifth time in program history with South Carolina leading the all-time series 3-1. USC Upstate, however, won the last meeting in the series, 74-68, in Columbia on Dec. 19, 2013.
