SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Upstate will look to shake off a four game losing streak against the University of South Carolina on Tuesday evening at Founders Park.
This will be the 13th meeting all-time between the two programs with South Carolina (26-25) having won the previous 12 matchups. Last season the Spartans hung with the Gamecocks for much of the game but a two-run seventh inning gave South Carolina a 6-3 victory over USC Upstate (22-26).
The Spartans are looking to bounce back after a tough sweep to Charleston Southern. Fifth-year senior and former Big South Player of the Week J.J. Shimko (Jacksonville, Fla.) leads the Spartan offense with a .389 batting average. The Sunshine State native also leads the team in hits, (56), doubles (13), total bases (72) and on-base percentage (.467). Fellow outfielder Jeff Taylor (Rock Hill, S.C.) is second on the team in batting average (.365), total bases (71) and on-base percentage (.445).
Southpaw Trey Van Der Weide (Longwood, Fla.) will get the start on the mound for the Spartans on Tuesday night. This will be the eighth start of the season for the junior who is currently 2-2 on the season with 4.58 era. Van Der Weide has pitched the second most innings on the team with 57.0 and he has 49 strikeouts on the season.
USC Upstate is hoping that South Carolina will be overlooking them, as the Gamecocks prepare to take on No. 5 Mississippi State this weekend in Starkville, MS. South Carolina has had a little bit of trouble this season in midweek games falling to Furman, North Carolina A&T and fellow Big South foe Gardner-Webb earlier this season. However, the Gamecocks took two-out of- three against Kentucky this past weekend at Founders Park.
This season the Gamecocks offense is led by TJ Hopkins and Andrew Eyster. Hopkins leads the team with a .296 average, while Eyster has a .291 average. Luke Berryhill has a team high 43 RBI's and Jacob Olsen leads the Gamecocks with 13 homeruns. Parker Coyne will take the mound for South Carolina on Tuesday evening against the Spartans. Coyne is making his first career start and is 2-0 on the season in 13 relief appearances.
The game can be seen on SECN+ and can be heard on FM 98.3 and AM 1400.
