SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate baseball team lost a pair of one run games on Saturday afternoon to Presbyterian 5-4 and 4-3 at Harley Park.
With the losses the Spartans fall to 16-20 overall and 4-11 in Big South Conference this season. Presbyterian improves to 18-18 overall on the season and 10-5 in Big South play.
Game One: Presbyterian 5, USC Upstate 4
Bottom 3rd: Austin Morgan reached on a fielder's choice and then advanced to second on a base hit up the middle by Andres Kim. Stone Pellegrino got hit by a pitch to load up the bases and Robby McGaha singled in the first run of the game for either side.
Top 4th: Nick Guimbarda walked to begin the inning and then reached third on an errant throw by the Spartans third baseman. A Jonathan White sacrifice fly to left field tied the game at one.
Top 5th: Johnny Cook doubled down the left field line to lead-off the inning and he came around to score on a pass ball by the Spartans catcher.
Bottom 5th: Stone Pellegrino singled up the middle with two outs in the inning. Pellegrino stole second to get into scoring position and McGaha singled in his second run of the night.
Top 7th: Ashby Smith homered to left field to take the lead back over the Spartans.
Top 8th: Guimbarda singled to right field on a full count pitch to lead-off the top of the eighth inning. Guimbarda moved all the way to third on a wild pitch by USC Upstate. Jimmy Marcelli then knocked in the go-ahead run for the Blue Hose with a single to left field.
Bottom 8th: J.J. Shimko singled through the right side of the infield to jump start the Spartan offense. Julian Rip was plunked in the next at bat and Jeff Taylor moved both runners into scoring position. Jake Bourke came through with an RBI knock and the Spartans were within a run of the Blue Hose. Garett Wallace then laced a pinch hit single through the left side of the infield to tie the game at four.
Top 9th: Michael Varga singled to center field to begin the top half of the ninth inning. Matt Burke came into the game to pinch run and eventually came around to score the game winning run on a stolen base and an error by the Spartans catcher.
- Robby McGaha returned to the lineup on Saturday afternoon and had a 3-for-5 day at the plate with a pair of RBI's in the contest.
- Andres Kim and Jake Bourke both had multi-hit performances in the loss for USC Upstate.
- Starting Pitcher Sean Hupp threw 7.0 innings, allowing 1 earned run on 6 hits.
Game Two: Presbyterian 4, USC Upstate 3
Bottom 1st: J.J. Shimko singled to right field with two-outs in the inning and came around to score on a Presbyterian error.
Top 2nd: Jonathan White doubled down the left field line to lead-off the top of the second inning. Ashby Smith then singled to right field and Matt Burke walked to load up the bases. Zacchaeus Rasberry doubled in a pair of runs to give Presbyterian a 2-1 advantage.
Bottom 5th: Taylor and Bourke hit back-to-back singles with one out in the fifth inning to put a pair of runners on for the Spartans. Shimko laced an RBI single into right field to give the Spartans the go-ahead run.
Top: 7th: Jimmy Marcelli hit a two-run homerun to left field to put the Blue Hose ahead once and for all.
- J.J. Shimko led the Spartan offense with a 4-for-5 day at the plate.
- Jeff Taylor ended the day with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate and scored a pair or runs in the game.
- USC Upstate will begin a three game series against Campbell University on Thursday April 18. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Harley Park.
