Spartans Walk-Off Aggies in 10 innings

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In the bottom of the tenth inning Jeff Taylor laced an 0-1 pitch back up the middle to score Garett Wallace from second base, as USC Upstate defeated North Carolina A&T 4-3 on Wednesday night at Harley Park.

With the win USC Upstate improves 13-16, while N.C. A&T improves to 16-13 on the season.


Top 3rd: In his first collegiate at bat Sean Meitzler doubled to right centerfield with one out in the inning. One batter later Brandon Melendez roped an RBI single into centerfield to score the opening run of the game.

Bottom 4th: With two outs in the inning Stone Pellegrino singled through the left side of the infield to keep the inning alive. Hunter Hice tripled to left centerfield to tie the game at one.

Top 5th: Jarrett Norman doubled to centerfield to lead-off the inning and the moved over to second base on a bunt single by Justin Williams. Meitzler walked to load up the bases and Dustin Baber hit a two-run single into left field to give the Aggies a 3-1 lead.

Bottom 8th: Jason Matthews doubled to left field to begin the inning and moved over to third base on a ground out to by J.J. Shimko. Matthews came around to score on a wild pitch.

Bottom 9th: Hice drew a leadoff walk to leadoff the bottom of the ninth inning. After a Griffin Zito strikeout, Hice stole second to put himself in scoring position. Jack Hennessy then singled back to the pitcher and Hice advanced to third. Matthews then hit a deep fly ball to left field and Meitzler dropped the ball, allowing Hice to score the game winning run.

Bottom 10th: Meitzler came into pitch for the Aggies in the bottom of the tenth inning. Wallace drew a full count walk to begin the inning and moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jake Bourke. That set the stage for Jeff Taylor to come through with the RBI base knock to win the game for USC Upstate.


  • Garett Wallace led the Spartans offense with a 3-for-4 night at the plate, while Jack Hennessy and Jason Matthews each had a pair of hits in the ballgame.
  • Will Wheeler picked up the win after throwing two innings of no hit baseball. Wheeler struck out four Aggie batters in the process.
  • Dustin Baber, Dawnoven Smith and Jarrett Norman all had multi-hit performances for N.C. A&T.


  • The USC Upstate baseball team will travel to Radford this weekend for a three game series. First pitch for Friday night's game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
