SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Six was the magic number in the game on Tuesday night at Harley Park, USC Upstate recorded six stolen bases, while Charleston Southern registered six errors in an 11-7 victory for the Spartans on Student Appreciation Day.
With the victory, USC Upstate snaps a three-game losing skid and improves to 12-16 overall on the season. Charleston Southern falls to 10-22 on the 2019 campaign.
Bottom 1st: J.J. Shimko reached on a one out single through the left side of the infield and stole second base to get into scoring position for the offense. After a Julian Rip walk both players moved up 90 feet, thanks to a wild pitch by Charleston Southern. Shimko came around to score on an error by the Buccaneers shortstop.
Top 2nd: Max Ryerson was plunked by a pitch on an 0-2 count to begin the second inning of action. Two batters later and Reid Hardwick tied the game up with an RBI single up the middle.
Bottom 2nd: Stone Stephenson struck out swinging but reached first on a wild pitch. Stephenson then made it all the way to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Jack Hennessy. Dario DeSantis struck out swinging but reached first on the second wild pitch of the inning. The wild pitch allowed Stephenson to score the go-ahead run from third base.
Bottom 3rd: Julian Rip ripped a ball past a diving Buccaneer centerfielder and sprinted around the bases for an inside the park homerun to give the Spartans a 3-1 lead. Garett Wallace then reached on a fielding error by the third baseman and advanced to second on a Jeff Taylor single. Stephenson and Jack Hennessy had back-to-back RBI singles to put USC Upstate up 5-1 over Charleston Southern.
Top 4th: Jason Miller and Ryerson had back-to-back singles to leadoff the fourth inning of action. Miller reached third, despite the Buccaneers grounding into a double play. An Andres Kim error allowed Miller to score from third.
Bottom 4th: J.J. Shimko hit a one out single up the middle and then chaos ensued on the next at bat. Shimko stole his second base of the season, but Charleston Southern threw the ball into center field allowing Shimko to take second, Shimko was able to score after the center fielder threw the ball into the Spartans dugout. Kim and Rip then hit back-to-back singles to keep the Spartans offense rolling, one batter later and Taylor came through with an RBI single to plate the second run of the inning for USC Upstate.
Top 5th: With one out in the inning Martin was plunked on a 3-1 pitch to put a baserunner on for the Buccaneers. Holdsworth singled to left field to put a pair of runners on for Horton. Horton then smoked a two-run double down the left field line. One batter later and Ryerson hit a two-run homerun over the right field wall. The homerun cut the Spartans lead to a single run at 7-6.
Bottom 5th: Hennessy leadoff the inning with a single up the middle of the infield and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. DeSantis walked on four straight pitches and both runners moved up 90 feet on a passed ball. Jason Matthews then ripped a pitch off the shortstops glove to bring in an insurance run for USC Upstate. A few batters later and Andres hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to plate another run for the Spartans offense.
Top 7th: Miller tripled to right center to begin the inning and came around to score on an RBI single by Blakeney.
Bottom 7th: Hennessy walked to leadoff the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs in the inning, Hennessy stole second base and then came around to score on a J.J. Shimko RBI single.
Bottom 8th: With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Taylor reached on an error by the Charleston Southern first baseman. Taylor stole second base to get into scoring position for the Spartans. Stephenson then singled to right field and the right fielder committed a throwing error, allowing Taylor to score from second base.
- J.J. Shimko led the Spartans offense with a 3-for-5 day at the plate. The fifth year senior stole a pair of bases and scored a pair of runs in the contest. Shimko also collected an RBI in the game.
- Julian Rip went 2-for-4 at the plate with an inside the park homerun and a pair of homeruns in the contest. Jack Hennessy also had a pair of hits, runs and stolen bases in the contest.
- Stone Stephenson and Jeff Taylor also finished with multi-hit games for USC Upstate.
- Grant Hoppock picked up the win after throwing 2.2 innings of relief for the Spartans.
- USC Upstate will host N.C. A&T tomorrow evening at 6:00 p.m.
