USC Upstate Holds off Davidson for 7-6 Victory

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Andres Kim went 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Kyle Schmitt pitching five innings to earn the win, as the USC Upstate baseball team defeated the Davidson Wildcats 7-6 in non-conference action on Tuesday evening at Harley Park.

USC Upstate improves to 8-8 on the season while Davidson falls to 6-5 overall.

SCORING BREAKDOWN

  • Top 1st:  Justin Lebek gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead on his RBI sacrifice fly to left field.
  • Bottom 2nd:  The Spartans broke open for five runs and went ahead 5-1. Andres Kim highlighted the inning with his two-RBI double down the left field line. Jeff Taylor began the scoring with an RBI single to center field. Two more runs scored for USC Upstate when J.J. Shimko reached on a Davidson error.
  • Bottom 5th:  Jack Hennessy and Drake Harris were responsible for both runs in the fifth to extend the Spartans lead to 7-1. Hennessy drove in the first run of the inning on his RBI sacrifice fly to center field. Harris followed the next at-bat with an RBI double down the left field line.
  • Top 6th:  The Wildcats answered by scoring four times to cut their deficit down to 7-5. Eric Jones plated two runs in the frame on his two-RBI double down the right field line. Matt Frey contributed an RBI single to center field while Brett Centracchio scored from third on a wild pitch.
  • Top 9th:  Jones led off the inning with a solo home run to left field to make the score 7-6.

NOTABLES

  • Andres Kim finished the game going 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI's to lead the Spartan offense. Jason Matthews added a pair of hits in the contest on Tuesday night.
  • Kyle Schmitt picked up his first win of the season with a 5.0 inning, 1 earned run performance. Schmitt gave up just 3 hits in the contest and struck out three batters on the night.
  • Big South reliever of the week Will Wheeler picked up his second save of the season, despite giving up a leadoff homerun.
  • Eric Jones went 3-for-5 at the plate with a trio of runs and a trio of RBI's for the Wildcats.

  • The Spartans remain at Harley Park on Wednesday evening to host Furman at 6 p.m.
