Spartans Return to Harley Park for Weekend Series against Florida Gulf Coast

Spartanburg, S.C. – After playing their last two ASUN weekend series on the road, the USC Upstate baseball team returns to the friendly confines of Cleveland S. Harley Park as Florida Gulf Coast visits for a league series. The series begins on Friday at 6 p.m. followed by a 2 p.m. game on Saturday and the series finale at Noon on Sunday. 

USC Upstate, 20-20-1 overall and 3-6 in the ASUN, is on a four-game winning streak after winning the final two games of its series at NJIT last weekend along with a 9-5 victory over N.C. A&T on Tuesday and a 7-1 triumph at Winthrop on Wednesday. The Spartans completed the season sweep over Winthrop, marking the first time that the road team has won a contest in the six-game all-time series.

The Spartans enter the weekend either at or near the top of the ASUN in many categories. Offensively, USC Upstate leads the league with 377 hits and 12 triples. The Spartans pain has been their gain, as USC Upstate is first in the conference with 60 hit batters. USC Upstate also is tops in the league in walks (176), sacrifice bunts (32) and sacrifice flies (19). On the mound, the Spartans lead the league with 361.0 innings pitched and have the third-most strikeouts (316). 

Florida Gulf Coast is 25-10 following an 8-1 loss at Miami on Wednesday. Richie Garcia leads the team with a .359 batting average along with a team-best 51 hits and 38 RBI. The Eagles are 3-3 in the league with a series win against NJIT and loss at Jacksonville. 

The Eagles lead the all-time series 19-11 after claiming two of three games in Fort Myers, Fla. last season. USC Upstate topped the Eagles 7-3 and 21-18 to win the series at Harley Park in 2016.
