Spartans Use Fast Start to Defeat Presbyterian College

Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate raced out to a 10-0 lead in the first five innings as the Spartans defeated Presbyterian College 10-3 on Tuesday evening at Harley Park. 

USC Upstate improves to 11-9-1 while Presbyterian College drops to 5-17. 

Scoring Breakdown

  • Bottom 1stToran Shahidi led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Shahidi scored on a Charlie Carpenter triple, with Carpenter scoring on a groundout.
  • Bottom 2ndAustin Morgan reached on a one-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a walk put runners on the corners, Andres Kim singled to score Morgan.
  • Bottom 3rdKyle Gensler reached on an error and scored on a single by Russell Schwertfeger. Kim singled with the bases loaded, bringing home a pair of runs for a 6-0 USC Upstate lead.
  • Bottom 4th – Carpenter led off the inning with a single and scored on a Schwertfeger triple.
  • Bottom 5thMason Stewart and Kim opened the inning with walks. Stewart scored on a Shahidi double with Kim crossing home plate on a Raiff base hit. A Carpenter single brought home Shahidi for a 10-0 Spartan lead.
  • Top 6th – Jack McLaughlin brought home a pair of runs for the Blue Hose with a double before scoring on a Ryan Hedrick base hit.

  • Carpenter went 3-for-5 with two singles, a triple, two runs scored and two RBI.
  • Kim went 2-for-3 with two singles, a run scored and three RBI.
  • Shahidi went 2-for-4 with a single, double, two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Schwertfeger went 2-for-4 with a single, triple and two RBI.
  • A.J. Priaulx went 4-for-4 with two singles, two doubles and a run scored to lead the Blue Hose.
  • USC Upstate's two triples were a season-high.
  • The Spartans outhit the Blue Hose 12-10.
  • Jacob Thiessen (1-3) earned the win as he allowed three runs on six hits with a strikeout in 5.0+ innings of work.
  • Chase Blueberg (0-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on two hits with two walks in 1.1 innings.
  • The start of the game was delayed by 50 minutes due to rain.
