Spartans Travel to Charleston Southern on Wednesday

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate baseball team will play its fifth consecutive game against a member of the Big South Conference on Wednesday as the Spartans travel to Charleston Southern for a 6 p.m. matchup against the Buccaneers.

USC Upstate is 5-6-1 after claiming a weekend series against Longwood at Harley Park. The Spartans scored a season-high 14 runs on Friday night and followed that performance on Saturday with the first shutout of the season in a 2-0 win. Longwood broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the seventh inning on Sunday to avoid the weekend sweep. Blake Whitney tied a season-high with eight strikeouts in Friday's game while Kevin Hickey threw 5.2 shutout innings on Saturday.

Senior catcher Charlie Carpenter was named the ASUN Player of the Week on Monday after batting .600 in four games last week. In Friday night's game, Carpenter tied a career-high with five hits as he went 5-for-5 with two doubles, three singles, two RBI and three runs scored. In Saturday's contest, Carpenter went 3-for-3 with three singles and an RBI.

Charleston Southern is 6-7 after a 5-4 walk-off win over Georgia on Monday night in which the Buccaneers scored four runs in the ninth inning to secure the win. In addition to Georgia, Charleston Southern has a pair of wins over Savannah State along with wins against Delaware, South Carolina and The Citadel.

USC Upstate leads the all-time series 10-5 after winning two of three matchups in 2017. The Spartans are seeking their first win at CSU Ballpark since an 8-7 triumph on May 8, 2013.
