Spartanburg, S.C.Blake Whitney tied a career-high with eight strikeouts and the USC Upstate offense plated a season-high 12 runs as the Spartans defeated Seton Hall 12-1 on Friday afternoon in non-conference action at Harley Park.

USC Upstate improves to 3-2-1 while Seton Hall drops to 1-3.

Scoring Breakdown

  • Bottom 1stAndres Kim reached on a leadoff walk and scored on a Pat Raiff triple. Raiff would score on an error with another run scoring on a Will Hardigree single.
  • Bottom 3rdCharlie Carpenter and Russell Schwertfeger reached on consecutive Seton Hall errors. Carpenter would score on a ground out.
  • Bottom 4thDrake Harris reached on a two-out single and scored on a Raiff single. Kim scored later in the inning on a wild pitch.
  • Bottom 6thToran Shahidi led off the inning with a double, which was his first USC Upstate hit. Shahidi scored on a Seton Hall error to give the Spartans a 7-0 lead. Following an error and a walk that loaded the bases, Carpenter hit a grand slam to center field to give the Spartans an 11-0 lead.
  • Bottom 7thKyle Gensler scored as Raiff was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
  • Top 8th – Chris Talbot scored on a groundout to get the Pirates on the board.
