Cross Country Preview:  at Royals Cross Country Challenge

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate cross country team will travel to Charlotte, N.C. on Friday afternoon to compete in the Royals Cross Country Challenge at McAlpine Creek Park.

The women's 5K race is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. and the men's 8K race will follow at 5 p.m.

The races will feature schools from the Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA, JUCO and USCAA classifications. Nearly 500 runners will compete in both the women's and men's races.

The Spartans will be joined in the invitational by Alabama-Huntsville, Anderson, Auburn University-Montgomery, Averett, Belmont Abbey, Benedict, Carson Newman, Catawba, Clayton State, College of Charleston, Columbia College, Columbus State, Converse, Davidson, Davis & Elkins, Emmanuel, Emory and Henry, Flagler, Furman, Johnson C. Smith, Kennesaw State, King, Lee University, Lees-McRae, Lenoir-Rhyne, Limestone, Liberty, Lynn, Mars Hill, Methodist, Montreat, Montevallo, Morehead State, Mount Olive, North Georgia, North Greenville, Piedmont, Presbyterian College, Pfeiffer, Queens, Southern Wesleyan, Spartanburg Methodist, SCAD Atlanta, Tusculum, Charlotte, USC Beaufort, UVa.-Wise, Warren Wilson, Wingate and Wofford.

USC Upstate returns to the course for the first time since Sept. 29 when it hosted the Upstate Invitational. The men registered a third-place performance while the women placed 10th.  A total of eight Spartan runners compiled season-best times in Jonathan Johnson, Matt Levonick, Jonathan Loy, Mia Davis, Stecy Cherono, Alicia Chavez, Allie Leavitt and Libby Jenette. Andrew Castano was the top individual performer for the men's team, crossing the finish line in 15th place with an 8K time of 26:48.6. Krysta Pierstorff led the women with a 31st place finish after running a 5K time of 19:35.8.

USC Upstate travels to the Big South Championship in Kernersville, N.C. on Friday, Oct. 26.
