Spartans Tabbed Eighth in Big South Preseason Cross Country Polls

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's and women's cross country teams have each been picked to finish in eighth place according to the league's head coaches as the annual Big South Preseason Cross Country Polls were released today by the conference office.

The Spartan men collected 53 points in the preseason poll while the women earned 49 points for the eighth place projections.

On the men's side, defending champion Campbell is the favorite this year after receiving all 11 first-place votes and tallied 121 points. Charleston Southern is second with 103 points followed by High Point in third with 95 points and UNC Asheville in fourth at 86 points. Radford comes in fifth after collecting 70 points while Hampton and Winthrop are tied for sixth at 60 points. Gardner-Webb (9th, 35 points), Presbyterian College (10th, 26 points) and Longwood (11th, 17 points) are behind USC Upstate and round out the preseason poll.

For the women's preseason standings, defending champion High Point has been picked to win the conference in 2018 with nine first-place votes and 118 points. Campbell ranks second with 110 points and one first-place vote followed by UNC Asheville in third at 85 points. Charleston Southern landed in the fourth position with 78 points and Hampton received the final first-place vote for a fifth-place projection with 75 points. Radford (70 points) and Winthrop (64 points) are sixth and seventh, respectively. Gardner-Webb (9th, 33 points), Presbyterian College (10th, 26 points) and Longwood (11th, 18 points) complete the preseason poll.

The Spartans open their season hosting the annual Eye Opener Invitational on Friday, August 31 at 6:30 p.m. from Milliken Research Center. The 2018 Big South Cross Country Championship is slated for Friday, Oct. 26 in Kernersville, N.C. and will be hosted by High Point.
