Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Teams Slated to Finish Middle of the Pack

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Big South Conference announced the preseason coaches polls for both the men's and women's outdoor track teams in a press release this morning. The USC Upstate men's track team was picked to finish fifth in the Big South, while the women's track team was slated to finish sixth.

"We are excited to get back to the outdoor track. We had some great performances during the indoors season and we are looking to improve on those performances going into the outdoor season." USC Upstate head track & field coach Carson Blackwelder said.

Both the men's and women's teams had productive outings at the Big South Indoor Championships last month. Adanma Uzor (Mauldin, S.C.) was named Female Field Athlete of the Meet after she won the triple jump competition with a leap of 12.05 meters. The Palmetto State native also finished second in the long jump with a pounce of 5.76 meters. Angelnique Bryant (Fort Mill, S.C.) is looking to continue her successful freshman campaign. Bryant was named the Big South Freshman of the Year after she won the 60 meter dash competition.

The USC Upstate women's team received 37 points in the preseason poll and is ranked ahead of Winthrop, Gardner-Webb and UNC Asheville. The Big South coaches picked Hampton to win the conference after the Pirates won the indoor championship. Hampton received 80 total points and 8 first place votes in the poll. High Point was picked to finish second with 73 points and had a single first place vote in the poll. Charleston Southern, Campbell and Radford were all placed ahead of USC Upstate in the poll.

The USC Upstate men's track team had top showings from Tanner Saunders (Pickens, S.C.), Javin Holston, Tony Augusta (Arlington, Va.), the men's DMR team and the men's 4X400 relay team. Saunders had a pair of top-five finishes in the 400 meter dash and 60 meter hurdles event. Holston finished sixth in the 60 meters dash and Augusta had a top-ten finish in both the weight throw and shot put. The men's DMR team finished in third place at the Indoor Championships and the 4x400 team had a fourth place finish.

The Spartans received 20 points in the preseason conference poll to be ranked fifth overall. USC Upstate is ranked ahead of Winthrop and UNC Asheville in the standings. Hampton was voted the favorite with 47 points and five first place votes. Campbell was picked to finish second with 44 total points and two first place votes.
