Johnson, Kountourogiannis Post Second-Place Finishes at Aggie Last Chance

Greensboro, N.C. – USC Upstate's Matt Johnson and Theodore Kountourogiannis collected 2nd place finishes Sunday as the Spartans participated in the Aggie Last Chance from the Irwin Belk Track.

Upstate saw one school record fall and 14 personal-bests broken in its final competition prior to the Atlantic Sun Outdoor Track and Field Championships next weekend. Essence Jackson broke her own school record, set three weeks ago at the Charlotte Invitational, in the 800-meter run as she placed 6th with a personal-best time of 2:15.23.

Johnson turned in his third top-5 finish this season in the 800-meter run after placing 2nd with a time of 1:52.18. Kountourogiannis posted his best finish of the season in the 1500-meter run after finishing 2nd following a personal-best time of 4:07.78.

Jake McKown had a personal-best mark of 10.65-meters in the shot put as he earned a 5th place performance in the event. Ross Oden and Alex Love both joined Kountourogiannis in the top 5 for the 1500-meter run; Oden ran a personal-best time of 4:10.34 en route to a 3rd place finish while Love was 5th with a time of 4:23.11.

The Spartan men picked up five personal-best marks including McKown, Kountourogiannis and Oden. Josh Lee had a personal-best time in the 800-meter run of 1:59.77 and Cameron Pratt a 57.39 in the 400-meter hurdles. Brandon Goodman tied his personal-best of 1.95-meters in the high jump for the second time this season.

On the women's side, Jasmine Polite recorded the best individual finish while Kierstin Williams compiled two 5th place finishes. Polite placed 3rd in the 1500-meter run after turning in a time of 4:47.58. Williams began by finishing 5th in the discus throw with a mark of 31.18-meters and then had a personal-best throw of 40.25-meters in the hammer throw to finish in 5th place.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Semaj Tolliver, Dominique Nock, Heaven Briggs and Brenicke Johnson finished 3rd in the event with a time of 46.43.

The Upstate women finished the day with nine personal-bests including the ones from Jackson and Williams. Brittany Walls (javelin throw), KeAndrea Ladson (javelin throw), Ashleigh Torres (javelin throw), Destinie Sykes (100-meter hurdles), Anastasia Kolesnitchenko (800-meter run), Nia Payne (800-meter run) and Rebecca Elliott (800-meter run) each collected personal-bests on Sunday.

The 2014 Atlantic Sun Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held May 16-17 in Jacksonville, Fla. The two-day event is being hosted by North Florida at Hodges Stadium.
