Upstate Takes Home Five Top Finishes on Final Day of Charlotte Invitational

Charlotte, N.C. – The USC Upstate track and field team wrapped up competition at the Charlotte Invitational by capturing five first-place finishes Saturday from the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center.

The Upstate women walked away with three first-place performances while the men logged two in the relay events. Molly Bliss also set a new personal-best in the 1500-meter run as she took home a 4th place finish with her time of 4:53.43.

Brittany Walls held off a late charge by UNC Charlotte's Evelyn Putnam to win the heptathlon by 44 points. She had two 2nd place finishes in the 800-meter run and javelin throw, and was fourth in the long jump. KeAndrea Ladson, taking part in her first career heptathlon, finished 4th with 3,745 points.

Dominique Nock and Alexis Jacobs both finished 1st in their events with Nock in the 100-meter dash and Jacobs the shot put. Nock posted a time of 13.11 in the 100-meter dash and Jacobs a throw of 12.88-meters in the shot put. The duo led the Spartan women on Saturday as they compiled 11 top-5 finishes.

Nock teamed up with Semaj Tolliver, Brenicke Johnson and Maya Weeks to pick up the top four spots in the 100-meter run. Tolliver would finish 2nd in the event, Johnson was 3rd and Weeks 4th. Anastasia Kolesnitchenko ran a 4:58.77 in the 1500-meter run to finish 5th, while Destinie Sykes was 5th in the 400-meter hurdles after her time of 1:12.82.

The Upstate men collected 1st place finishes in the 4x100-meter relay and 4x800-meter relay. The 4x100-meter relay team of Joshua Powers, Kyle Jones, Brandon Goodman and Jonathan Jackson turned in a time of 44.72, while the 4x800-meter relay team of Bryson Dawkins, Andrew Kipchumba, Theodore Kountourogiannis and Josh Lee posted a time of 8:28.64.

Powers had the top finish for the men as he placed 2nd in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.42. Jackson and Matt Johnson each earned 3rd place finishes in the 100-meter dash and 400-meter dash. Jackson ran an 11.92 in the 100-meter dash and Johnson a 50.20 in the 400-meter dash. Kountourogiannis was 5th in the 1500-meter run with his time of 4:11.94. Jones also finished 5th in the 110-meter hurdles following a time of 17.07.

The Spartans will take the next three weeks off before heading to Jacksonville, Fla. May 16-17 for the 2014 A-Sun Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by North Florida.
