Upstate Sweeps Women’s Track and Field Weekly Awards

Macon, Ga. – USC Upstate's Ashley Edmond and Destinie Sykes both received Atlantic Sun Women's Outdoor Track and Field weekly honors on Wednesday afternoon for their performances last week at the Carolina's Cup, it was announced by the league office.

Edmond was named the A-Sun Women's Track Performer of the Week while Sykes garnered A-Sun Women's Field Performer of the Week honors.  It is the first career weekly honor for both athletes.

Edmond finished third in the 400-meter dash after breaking her own school record in the event with a time of 57.66, which ranks sixth in the A-Sun this season. She also ran the first leg of the 4x400-meter relay as the team finished fourth with a time of 4:06.79.

Sykes set two school records in the triple jump and 400-meter hurdles. Her leap of 11.32-meters in the triple jump broke her old school record, while her time in the 400-meter hurdles of 1:08.16 surpassed the previous mark set by Rebecca Elliott last season.

The duo is the second and third Upstate athletes to collect weekly awards from the conference this season. Brenicke Johnson was named A-Sun Women's Track Performer of the Week on Mar. 19.

The Spartans return to action this weekend (Apr. 18-19) at the Charlotte Invitational hosted by UNC Charlotte at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center.
